The Challenge

AISEO ranked for 19.6K organic keywords but monthly organic traffic had slipped 18% to 10.8K as AI Overviews absorbed the top-of-funnel how-to queries the blog depended on. Authority Score sat at 39 against a 417.2K backlink profile from only 4.2K referring domains, so link equity was concentrated and thin. Worst of all, an AI writing tool was barely cited by AI engines itself: AI visibility index 15, 42 mentions, 78 cited pages, with ChatGPT accounting for nearly all of it and Gemini contributing zero cited pages.

Huge keyword footprint, shrinking traffic, and almost no presence inside AI answers.

Our Approach

The Strategy

STEP 01

Rebuilt the money pages around author and book intent

Turned generic AI writer copy into dedicated use-case pages for book writing, chapter outlining, manuscript expansion, and self-publishing workflows, so the platform ranked for what authors actually type instead of only for tool-category terms.

STEP 02

Consolidated the cannibalising blog

19.6K keywords were spread across overlapping how-to posts. Merged and redirected near-duplicate articles into canonical guides, which concentrated internal links and stopped the platform competing against itself.

STEP 03

Answer-engine optimisation layer

Added extractable definitions, comparison tables, pricing clarity, and structured FAQ blocks so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini could quote the source rather than summarise competitors.

STEP 04

Fixed the referring-domain imbalance

417.2K backlinks from only 4.2K domains meant sitewide footers were doing the work. Ran a digital PR and integration-partner push aimed at new domains rather than new links, lifting the diversity that Authority Score 39 was capped by.

STEP 05

Product-led content for the free tools

Wrapped each free utility (paraphraser, humanizer, readability checker) in a proper landing page with schema, use cases, and upgrade paths, converting tool traffic into trial signups.

STEP 06

Published-author proof programme

Collected and published case pages from users who shipped full-length books with the tool, creating first-party evidence that both search and AI engines could cite.

AI Overviews eat the exact queries an AI writing tool ranks for.

The -18% organic decline was not a penalty, it was the SERP changing shape. Informational queries like how to write a book chapter now resolve inside the AI answer, so chasing them harder would not have recovered the traffic. The realistic play was to shift weight to commercial and comparison intent, where a click is still required, and to optimise the informational layer for citation instead of clicks. Traffic recovers slower that way, but qualified signups do not.
