The Challenge

Green Chef held 19.4K ranking keywords and 198.7K monthly organic visits, but traffic was down 3.4% and the decline sat squarely in the recipe and diet-education content that fed the funnel. Authority Score 44 came off 36.3K backlinks from only 5.2K referring domains, so link equity was concentrated rather than broad. Paid search carried just 10.9K visits across 136 keywords, meaning organic had to do 70% of the work. On the AI side the brand was visible but not owned: AI visibility index 29, 2.1K mentions and 573 cited pages, with AI Overviews driving 736 mentions but Gemini citing only 28 pages.

A large organic base slipping backwards while AI answers absorbed the recipe queries that built it.

Our Approach

The Strategy

STEP 01

Rebuilt diet-plan hubs around buying intent

Keto, paleo, vegan, gluten-free and Mediterranean each got a proper hub with pricing, plan comparison, sample menus and delivery coverage, so the 19.4K keyword footprint pointed at pages that convert rather than at loose blog posts.

STEP 02

Consolidated the cannibalising recipe archive

Hundreds of near-duplicate recipe posts competed for the same queries. Merged and redirected them into canonical recipe collections, concentrating internal links and stopping the site from bidding against itself organically.

STEP 03

Answer-engine optimisation for recipe and diet queries

Added extractable ingredient tables, nutrition schema, step markup and short definitional answers so ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini could quote Green Chef instead of paraphrasing aggregator sites.

STEP 04

Widened the referring-domain base

36.3K backlinks from 5.2K domains is a narrow profile at this scale. Ran a nutrition-press and dietitian-partnership push targeted at new domains rather than new links, which is what Authority Score 44 was capped by.

STEP 05

Turned the recipe library into a product

Packaged the highest-performing organic recipe clusters into printed and digital recipe books, then linked each cluster to the matching book with schema and a dedicated landing page, creating a second revenue line off content already ranking.

STEP 06

Protected the branded and comparison layer

Locked down competitor comparison pages and branded queries with refreshed pricing, cancellation and delivery answers, since those are the queries where a click is still required and where paid was overpaying.

The recipe query is now answered before the click.

The 3.4% organic decline was not a penalty, it was the SERP changing shape. A query like how many carbs in a keto dinner resolves inside the AI answer, so pushing harder on that content would not have recovered the visits. The realistic move was to shift weight onto plan, pricing and comparison intent where a click is still required, optimise the recipe layer for citation instead of clicks, and monetise the library directly through recipe books. Raw sessions recover slower that way, but revenue per session does not.
