AI Search Visibility for a Specialty Coffee Brand
Specialty coffee ecommerce AI search visibility / GEO case study: rebuilding a coffee brand's entity, product and roastery schema, and coffee-media citations so AI engines cite the brand for beans, brewing, and subscription prompts. Engagement in progress.
Alba & Coal Coffee
A direct-trade specialty coffee roaster with a subscription program and a single flagship cafe. Cult following in-market, no meaningful presence in AI answers where new subscribers now discover roasters.

The Challenge
Product pages read like tasting cards for the initiated. There was no Product schema, no comparison content, and citations were confined to the brand's own blog rather than the coffee-media sites AI engines actually quote.
Alba & Coal Coffee
Only 3 of 28 tracked drinker prompts cited Alba & Coal, and none of its origins or subscription options were surfaced.
The Strategy
Baselined drinker-intent prompts
Tracked 28 prompts across bean recommendations by roast, brewing methods, subscription comparisons, and 'best specialty roasters in the US' across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.
Cleaned the brand entity
Rebuilt Wikidata, Google Business Profile, and 9 specialty-coffee directories with consistent origin sourcing, roast style, and subscription facts.
Rewrote product + brewing pages for extraction
35 bean pages and 12 brewing guides restructured with definitional lead paragraphs, tasting spec tables, and Product + Recipe + FAQPage schema so engines could quote flavor notes and ratios verbatim.
Placed citations with coffee media AI engines trust
Landed contributed pieces and inclusion in shortlists across 6 specialty coffee publications and 2 brewing guides that repeatedly showed up as AI answer sources.

AI answers started quoting a discontinued single-origin.
Old blog posts about a discontinued Ethiopian lot were being cited months after the coffee was gone. I added clear status callouts, updated schema availability to Discontinued, and redirected the highest-traffic post to the closest current lot - AI answers stopped surfacing the discontinued bean inside a month.
Subscription signups from people who 'read about us on ChatGPT' went from a novelty to a real slice of the pipeline. That was not on my radar a year ago.
Client name changed for privacy.
