Have you ever wondered on searching something in a search engine that why some websites’ links come on very first page? Why some selected websites are ranked well than others? When you enter some keyword in the search box of any search engine, on the result page you get summary list of some websites along with a small description called ‘meta description’. Actually link, Meta description or the content of the website contain those keyword(s) which you enter in the search box that is why only they are displayed on the result page.

 What Is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is a technique which helps SEs [Search Engines] to find and rank a website better than the other website, included the search queries by the users. With increase in the competition in the online world online marketing has come up as a greatest mean for advertisers to broadcast their message. Due to this competition it has become difficult for new websites to get better ranking and earn more profit. For them SEO is a booster. SEO is not a magic but made up of some simple procedures and practices which can improve reputation of a website in eyes of an SE. Here, in this article some major concepts and ideas of SEO have been covered.

What a layman does when he has to search something about his query? He opens his web-browser. Then he simply goes on the homepage of any Search Engine [SE] and types his query. Do you know there are incredibly number of available web-pages on fantastic number of topics? But bad thing is that a user never reaches those web-pages which could give him best information on his query. REASON? Reason is simple that more than half number of web-pages’ content on internet is not even indexed by the SEs. Thus both, the user and the web-page owner go in loss.

For understanding this let us learn how any search engine brings out results to display on the result page. Every SE e.g. Google, Yahoo, MSN has their own complicated procedure to pick out best results to display on result page. But 4 major steps are always taken up by any SE.

Scanning:  A web-scanner [sometimes called robot or spider] scans the web-page in specific, constant and automatic manner. This is called Web crawling or spidering. Hyperlink structure of net is used to crawl web-pages. These automated programs are run by SEs.

Indexing: After scanning the web-page its content can be indexed. Which means it is saved in a database of documents which makes up a search engine’s “index”. It is needed to be tightly managed so that vast amount of documents can be sort in a fraction of seconds during the search process.

Processing: When a search request is made to an SE, it retrieves from its index all documents that match the query. This is decided on the base that whether the keywords and phrases by the searcher match with the content of the web-page [document].

Ranking: After determining which outcomes really fit the search query, Search Engine determine ranking of the website and decide which web-pages are displayed first. This is done through their own algorithmic calculations. SE like Google keeps this algorithm secret.

NOW THINK! If your website cannot be found on SE or your article cannot be put in their database, you miss a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to reach the traffic via SEs. Keywords which a user types in the search box have extra-ordinary value. A good SEO means boost for your website. And poor SEO means your website is buried deep into the web of internet. So purchasing SEO by money or by time surely gives good returns.

Basic Technique

Two basic rules for good SEO:

1. Write content that will be utilized by the people who look for your product, because they are the users not the SEs who will search a particular query. Any SE can change its algorithm anytime to decide site ranking but no one can change a user’s mind once he assumed that he can get his required result from your site. So write content for users not for SEs because even search engines also are working for users.

 2. Build links to your pages to exhibit their importance. Links are votes and votes enable you to get elected to page 1. But don’t mix quality with quantity. 10-15 links from quality web-pages are far better than 100 links form websites having poor rank.

SEO can take your website to great heights if right procedure is followed. Select right key-words by focusing on the interest of your audience. SEO is a marathon not a sprint. You have to keep your site updated consistently over the long term while working to increase the number of back-links you get from authority websites.
